A truly wonderful place to stay
Shane and I and our daughter and her partner stayed at this beautifully presented town house in July. We had one of our best holidays ever. Exploring the Loire valley, the chateaux, the beautiful villages, watching the Tour de France pass by were all of course wonderful but the best experience was simply living in the town of St aignan: buying provisions at the Saturday market just out the front door, the daily baguettes obtained from a nearby bakery, our evening aperitifs at aux Cepages and several great restaurants. Rachael and Trent could not do enough to help us and the lovely Natalie from next door. Could not recommend La Boulangerie more highly.

Great stay
La Boulangerie is a gem. The apartment is spacious and nicely decorated. The owner has done an amazing job in restoring an old bakery and turning it into a warm comforting home. I would say it is one of the best rental apartments we have had: centrally located at a picturesque village, tastefully decorated with comfortable beds and sitting areas, beautiful views and a lovely kitchen. The weekend market at the square was a nice surprise, not to be missed if you want some fresh French produce for a home-cook meal. The part we liked best is the evening strolls along the river.

French Fairytale
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our 6 day stay at La Boulangerie! Set in a quaint medieval village, the accommodation offered both charming details—exposed wooden beams, stonework—and tasteful modern facilities. Everything one could need is provided, and we were warmly welcomed upon arrival. The view from the upper bedroom is straight out of a fairytale (as shown in photos). Highlights of our stay included the Saturday food market in the village square (right outside the door!), visiting Amboise and the many beautiful Chateau in the area. I highly recommend this lovely spot in the Loire Valley.

Perfect place to stay
We loved our stay at La Boulangerie. It has charming medieval character as well as beautiful decorating, modern bathrooms and kitchen, and comfortable bedrooms. The pictures on the website are accurate; take special notice of the view from the third floor bedroom, a once-in-a-lifetime view. The living room was comfortable too and had a TV that carried BBC and CNN, for those who want to catch up on what is happening elsewhere. Everything was spotless, and Nathalie, the manager, was amusing and helpful--fun to meet. When we had to leave earlier on our day of departure, she was most accommodating. The village itself is so interesting: the medieval buildings, the beautiful church, and the grounds of the chateau, with lovely views over the countryside. Don't miss La Petrie with its excellent baguettes, croissants, and pain au chocolate. We also strongly recommend L'Amarena restaurant, just steps from La Boulangerie. The owners are so friendly and welcoming and the food is delicious, especially, in our opinion, the Sicilian and the Italienne. We're a bit embarrassed to admit it, but we ate there three nights--we couldn't stay away! St. Aignan is perfectly situated for visits to the chateaux. There are so many to choose from, but our favorites were Chenonceau, Villandry, Usse and Cheverny (be there at 5:00 to see them feel the hunting dogs). We also spent time in amboise and toured Leonardo da Vinci's last home there. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. We recommend La Boulangerie most highly and would love to stay there again.

A little touch of paradise
Our stay in this property was so wonderful that at first I considered keeping it a secret - but I've raved to so many of my friends and family that the word's out! I've been holidaying in Europe regularly since 1978 and I have to concede that Christmas, 2012 in 'La Boulangerie', St Aignan, provided one of the highlights of my travel experiences. Your first viewing of the house will make you gasp: those beams! those flagstones! the beautiful, spiral staircases! The historical aspect of the building initially promises a cosy, quirky environment, but in addition to this, it's fitted with all mod. cons: neat kitchen; dishwasher; modern bathrooms; spacious bedrooms; crisp linen; comfortable furnishings. It's a dream. And on Saturday mornings, there's a market on the doorstep, offering the finest comestibles France has to offer. The cheese! The oysters! A few doors down is your local bistro - 'Chez Constant'. Drop in there for dinner on your first night and from then on, you'll be treated like a local. It would be perfectly feasible to spend your time in this village without a car, as there is so much to do, for those who just love to eat, drink and ramble, but if you want to go further afield, the chateaux and vineyards of the Loire Valley are easily accessible. After holidaying here twice, I want to live in St Aignan. Correction: I made that decision after the first visit. Full marks to Rachael, the owner, whose communication and helpfulness have been second-to-none. Nathalie, the local shop-owner who will greet you on your arrival, completes the welcoming team for this spectacular holiday rental. Do yourself a favour - book this accommodation.

Fantastic house and location
We stayed for 6 days in August 2012 with our 1 year old and 3 year old girls. This house could not have been more convenient or beautiful for that matter. Everything you could need is within short walking distance - restaurants, bars, bakeries and the food market on saturday morning outside the house was excellent. Locals are very nice, the medieval town with their cobbled streets are beautiful. The town has a great park and swimming pool both next to the river with a great view of the chateau above - all of which our kids loved. The Zoo Parc de Beauval is a great day out and is only 2 miles or so away. Couldn't ask for a better location for a holiday - great location, great wine, great food and more chateaus than you could shake a stick at. Thanks to Starr for being so helpful. This place is worth every penny.

Great Place and Lovely Village
My sister and her husband and 2 children (ages 10 and 2) and myself and my husband had a fabulous 10 day stay in this lovely house in St. Aignan. The location was great. We rented a car and headed out most days to explore the region and its many chateaus. St. Aignan in a lovely little village, very safe and easy to walk around. There was a very good bakery just up the street from our place and we went every morning for fresh baking for breakfast. There is a world renowned zoo very close by - 10 or so minutes - that we all enjoyed. Probably one of the best zoos I have been too. Many vineyards in the region and sooo much history. Starr was very welcoming and helpful and all in all we had a great holiday. Highly recommend both the accommodations and the village.

The Old Bakery in the Loire Valley
I hesitate to write this review since I really don't want people to find this much overlooked beautiful part of France. People flock to all regions of France but the Loire? Why there? Simple - beauty, tranquility, history, wine, food, wonderful people, reasonable rates, close to transportation, and not crowded. We spent a wonderful week at the Ancienne Boulangerie in St.Aignan-sur-Cher whose website pictures don't do it justice. We were 3 senior couples who all would go back in a heartbeat. It is a 17th C building, so the stairs reflect that charm but there is a handrail so no problem. The new kitchen best stocked we've ever rented, with an old wooden dining room table for 6. The bar-wonderful for bottles of wine we came with daily from countless wineries all around. We learned to visit a winery and meet the wine-maker not the Wine Tasting Centres which are only places that sell wines made regionally-far better experience to talk directly to actual winemakers.(Monmousseau was great) We went to 2 different wineries a day. Average price per bottle is 5E. The old bakery looks out onto the town square but is very quiet. Church bells do ring but stop at 8PM and don't ring again until 7AM with a combination of bells that is charming. It was absolutely quiet the entire night. We parked the cars 20m away in the square-no cost. There was a TV with videos/DVDs which we never used since we were not there for that and a separate DVD in the bar area for music too. Upstairs on level 2, the washing machine worked great and there are 2 bedrooms, one with 3 twin beds, one with a large queen bed. They share a huge bathroom - all new fixtures and plenty of hot water always. On the third level there is a beautiful very large suite with queen bed, separate bathroom with shower. The exposed original beams add to the charm. Beds perfect! We used the upstairs office area for WIFI connections that connected within 5 seconds - wonderful. Everything was spotless, Starr, the owner, greeted us and met us when we were to leave - she even came early since we were leaving at 5AM the last morning - nothing was a bother at all. She supplied information, brochures and was charming. We went to 2 castles a day every day all different and fascinating from Chenonceau, Cheverny, Chambord-east to Valencay and Montresor-south, Amboise and Clos Luce (Da Vinci's home)-north and Villandry and Usse-west all within an hour drive. The best bakery ever around the corner croissants .95 and camembert 1.50

Best Three Weeks of Our Life
We stayed for three weeks (June 3rd-June 24th), it was simply amazing. Two parents and four children ages 3-11. Our girls had the upstairs, including a full bathroom, to themselves, with a perfect view of the church; the boys had the bedroom on the second floor next to the master bedroom. We actually counted 105 steps to the bakery from this townhouse. It is in the very center of the most charming town. Market is on Saturday right outside the window where we tried all the cheeses, breads, vegetable, meats (including rabbit and horse), and practiced our French (we spoke no French upon arrival). We took strolls through the town and walked the two blocks to the park on the island in the river, with this medevil town as our backdrop; it was a perfect simply life, filled with history and exploration. With castles and picturesque towns in every direction it was the perfect location. We ate at the local creparie, tried every type of pastrie at the Patisserie (try lots, because they cost twice as much in Paris), toured the crypt of the local church, waived to the local cobbler across the street, listened to the bells of the clock tower on the church ring on the hour and half-hour during the daylight, and even enjoyed pizza and Thai from the restaurants both within a block of us. We even spent a day at the amazing Zoo, which was worth every minute. Starr and Douglas were excellent hosts, and very responsive if we needed assistance. The townhouse is a three story converted bakery with stone walls and beams throughout; it was our summer home. It had everything we need to prepare meals and feed a family for nearly a month. We could not have found a more perfect city, or a more perfect home to spend our summer. Being able to let your kids walk to the bakery in a foreign country, order in a foreign language, use foreign money, and be greeted by everyone with a smile and such friendly dispositions was amazing. St. Aignan is essentially a small agricultural town, with a slower pace of life and wonderful people. We spent a week in Paris after St. Aignan and toured the Louve, when to the top of the Eiffel Tower, road the boats and at great food; but, when we remember our summer in France, our hearts return to St. Aignan, our little town in the French countryside. We would return in a minute, and recommend this location to any family looking for the perfect escape. We traveled with our friends who stayed nearby with their family of 7. It was the perfect vacation.

Great house in a great town
The house was spacious with large bedrooms, especially the top floor. Huge room and what a view. The house was very comfortable with everything you could possibly need. The house overlooks the square which is where you park. Very convenient & had no trouble getting a space each day. We were very comfortable here during our week in the Loire Valley. It was a great base for our vacation. We really loved the town as well. Wonderful medieval town, just lovely! We enjoyed walking the streets and walking around the chateau that is there next to the beautiful church! In town, a short walk away from the house is a grocery store that has everything we needed. There is also a larger store a short drive away. The people in town were friendly & helpful & Starr was very welcoming and just a phone call away if you need something. Also, check out the zoo that is just a few short miles away from the house! Wonderful zoo. Also, many vineyards all over the place The location of the town is absolutely ideal for visiting so many of the incredible chateaus of the Loire Valley. There are so many of them just a short drive away. The chateaus were absolutely stunning, breathtaking, gorgeous, just absolutely incredible!! Wow! This whole area was better than I imagined it would be. What an amazing vacation! I have travelled to Europe 10 times now on my vacations & this was one of my favorite trips! I definitely plan on coming back someday. So you can not go wrong with this house, this town and this location.

Atmospheric town-house
This town-house has a very mediaeval and ancient atmosphere overlooking the authentic old roofs of the town. Starr and Douglas were wonderful hosts and were very attentive to our needs. The house was very spacious, clean and tidy and beautifully presented. We had no problems with anything at all. We all loved the attic room, especially looking out at the church late at night and watching the birds swirl around the steeple. Its position on one of the main squares made it very convenient to local shops and restaurants. There was easy access to the Loire and Cher valleys.Of our 20 week stays in Europe this was up with the best.

Winter wonderland in Saint-Aignan
We just came back from our vacation in France and during that trip, we had the chance of spending 5 wonderful days in THE OLD BAKERY...We enjoyed every minute of our stay. The house was perfect for our family of 5 ( 2 adults and 3 kids). Yes the house is old...and absolutely charming!!! The kitchen and both bathrooms are totally remodelled to the highest standards. The town is very nice with a good bakery, good restaurants and a supermarket you can walk to...It was also very pleasant to meet Starr and Douglas...very good hosts. If you want the authentic feeling of the French village lifestyle...this is definitely the place to be...and close to several castles... We took a picture of our younger son reading by the window of the 3rd floor bedroom...with the castle in the background...= PRICELESS!

Lovely home on the square
Booking a house through the internet can often be a hit or miss adventure, but this "baker's home on the square" exceeded our expectations. We were three middle aged couples traveling to France for the first time and St Aignan was our first destination. It's location next to the river Cher was ideal for sightseeing throughout the Loire region and the owner was very helpful with suggestions for local sites and restaurants. The house and village were both ideal as the starting location for our trip to France. After our flight over from Texas we drove straight down from Paris, arriving late in the afternoon and in need of a good nights sleep. The charming house and hosts welcoming us were greatly appreciated! The description of the home is very accurate, it has been recently remodeled with the amenities that made our stay restful and enjoyable (especially the lovely bathrooms). The Willis's are wonderful hosts, checking in on us often enough to make sure that everything was going well. In the past I have found that online vacation homes often embellish the description of the properties, but not this time. St Aignan is a wonderful village and we found the local business owners very accommodating of our limited skills in their native tongue. Right around the corner there is a wonderful bakery for breakfast goodies and we greatly enjoyed our early morning coffee with the locals. The region is charming, not only with a multitude of chateaus to choose from but also the lovely countryside and villages that made for wonderful driving tours. We have already recommended this home and region in France to our friends back home. Our only regret was that we hadn't planned a longer stay!

Best holiday house we've stayed in
We spent a wonderful week in St. Aignan with our family and friends (3 adults, 4 kids). The house was charming and spacious and was absolutely perfect for our needs. The medieval town of St. Aignan was absolutely charming, with great bakeries, butcher, and a delicious pizza shop across the street from the house. The photos of the house really don't do it justice. It is really large and we had room to spare. We especially loved the spacious room with the three twin beds--perfect for our kids. The kitchen was very clean and had absolutely everything we needed, including a great espresso maker. The village location was perfect for exploring the area countryside and castles. We visited two goat farms and a lovely vineyard, as well as a number of castles. Because the distances were short from the house, we were able to do this as half-day excursions. The boys also loved being able to walk down to the river and riverside playground. There is also a nice looking swimming pool but we never ended up going. In short, we LOVED it and would love to come back!
